The ESRF employs about 600staff and is organized as a French société civile. The working language of the ESRF is English.

The Experiments Division designs, constructs and runs the ESRF experimental stations (= beamlines). Within this division the Materials Science group is now seeking to recruit a:

Technician (m/f)
for the Materials Science Beamline (ID11)

THE FUNCTION:
ID11 is a high-energy beamline. It currently operates 3 experimental stations in an energy range of 10-100 keV, with emphasis on higher energies. Specifically, ID11 has developed a strong program in high-energy focussing applications, and a major beamline upgrade is currently underway, involving the construction of a facility to house a new instrument designed to open up the possibility of performing high-energy nanofocussing; this has never been achieved with hard X-rays. The new instrument will be housed in a building outside the experimental hall, which is currently under construction.

You will participate in the installation and commissioning of the new facility as well as provide technical assistance for the beamline experimental programme. You will be expected to carry out both long-term improvements to the beamline, daily upkeep and maintenance, as well as punctual, unplanned interventions required by specific experimental needs. You will work together with the rest of the beamline and associated staff, consisting of ~10 scientists, engineers, and technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
You must hold a technician diploma (HND, HNC, DUT, BTS, Staatlich Geprüfter Techniker, Titulo de Ingeniere Técnico, Diplomapost secundario or equivalent). Experience at large scientific instruments, in particular experience with synchrotron radiation and X-ray instrumentation would be highly beneficial. Although the candidate might be specialised in a particular field, he/she should be comfortable working in mechanical, electrical, vacuum, etc. areas. Computing skills would also be most welcome. An important aspect of the post is coordinating works with central support groups and outside companies; good interpersonal and communications skills are thus also required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The ESRF shares a site with several other major European scientific institutes, it offers an exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. Installation allowances will be given to new staff coming from outside the Grenoble area, and an expatriation allowance can be given according to specific internal regulations.
If you are interested, please send us a fax (+33 (0)4 76 88 24 60) or an e-mail (recruitm@esrf.fr) with your address, and we will provide you with an application form. You can also print out an application form on the World Wide Web http://www.esrf.fr/.

Deadline for returning the application forms: 01 September 2006

Applications received after the deadline may be considered for the selected vacancy if not filled or for future similar positions.
